Q: Is there a cost to audition?
Q: How do I prepare?
A: Prepare one minute of a song of your choice that shows off your voice. Practice singing it without accompaniment by memory. Arrive warmed up and ready to sing. A starting pitch can be given if desired.
Q: What can I expect during my audition?
A: During your audition you’ll sing simple exercises to demonstrate tone quality and vocal control. Using the piano for support, the director will ask you to sing the exercise several times in various keys to demonstrate range. You’ll be given an opportunity to sing a song that you will have prepared in advance (see above). The director might ask you to learn something new, then ask you to sing your part while another part is sung. Prospective participants will be invited to a call back audition where you’ll sing with other singers in various combinations to assess blend, balance, poise, and ability to sing an independent harmony part.
Q: What will the choir director expect?
A: Fundamentals: accuracy of intonation (singing in tune), fullness of tone, free singing, joy for performing, confidence, and a capacity to take direction. Beyond that, singers must be able to sing in harmony and to learn quickly. Music literacy is not a criteria for selection, though the ability to read music is a plus. We’re looking for soloists who perform with charisma and style, and who can also meld with a unified ensemble.
Q: When will I be notified about my audition outcome?
A: Call back notices are delivered within 48 hours of the last day of preliminary auditions. Results from the call back audition will be announced within 48 hours of the close of the audition.
Q: If I miss the bi-annual audition for joining Ovation Training, may I join mid-season?
A: Sometimes. Call to discuss exceptions: 503-697-7464.
