Ovation Show Choir
Ovation is a dynamic and versatile vocal ensemble made up of high-school age performers. Audiences hear a broad range of music each season, including pop, rock, soul, folk, and broadway. Ovation singers enjoy an exciting blend of performance and education experiences. Singers train in vocal production, harmonization, ensemble technique, and stage presence. Ovation concert engagements include frequent solo and small ensemble performance opportunities.
The Gents of Ovation are graduates of Portland Boychoir. Upon joining Ovation they enrich their musical experience and education while also filling an important mentoring role for the younger boys of Portland Boychoir. The Gents periodically join with the Advanced Choir as Portland Boychoir for larger choral works.
The Ladies of Ovation are selected by audition after two years of instruction in Ovation Training. Musicianship skills – including rhythm and sight-singing, ear training, and vocal performance – are the main focus of their training, as well as basic experience with stage movement and choreography.
Ovation’s success as a vibrant performing arts ensemble is a reflection of the training received in Portland Boychoir and Ovation Training. Having enjoyed a high-quality, personal level of instruction, Ovation singers are prepared to perform in a manner that showcases their passion and skill in the performing arts.
With an increased emphasis on a study of music in many different styles, training continues in music literacy, vocal production, ensemble technique, and stage presence. Regular rehearsals and retreats provide each member the opportunity to develop as an individual performer and independent musician. Singers work with microphones and sing sophisticated harmonies in tailor-made arrangements. Songs are chosen collaboratively among the performers and director, and draw from current trends in popular music as well as radio standards and broadway hits from all time periods.
Performances include concerts, outreach opportunities, guest appearances, and occasional tours.
Ovation Training: A two-year training choir for 7th and 8th grade girls.
The girls enrolled in this two-year program receive training in music literacy, vocal production, improvisation, mic technique, part-singing, ensemble skills, movement, and stage presence. Repertory includes pop, rock, soul, folk, and broadway.
Performances include combined concerts with Ovation Show Choir and Portland Boychoir’s Advanced Choir, concerts encompassing the entire organization, and Ovation Training recitals in which each of the singers is featured as a soloist. Tour opportunities may be available as well. In 2012, members from Ovation and Ovation Training traveled to southern California to perform and attend a workshop at Disneyland.
Auditions are held bi-annually in the Spring of odd-numbered years for girls who will be entering the 7th or 8th grade the following September. Eligible participants are expected to show confidence as a soloist and the ability to sing harmony. Advancement into Ovation takes place by invitation after two years of training and demonstrated achievement of skills.
